Pronouns in Chinese are really easy because they never change form depending on where they are in a sentence.
There’s no switching from “I” to “me,” or “they” to “them”, like in English. The word stays exactly the same!
Here’s a quick guide to HSK 1 pronouns.
1. The Core Singular Pronouns
These are the three foundational building blocks. See how the spoken sound for he, she, and it is exactly the same (tā). They only look different when written down!

Note: If you want to be extra polite (like talking to a boss, teacher, or elder), you can change nǐ (你) to nín (您).
2. Making Them Plural: Just add “Men” (们)
To turn any singular pronoun into a plural one (“we,” “you all,” “they”), you simply stick the neutral-tone suffix men (们) onto the end.
- Wǒmen (我们) = We / Us
- Nǐmen (你们) = You all / You (plural)
- Tāmen (他们 / 她们) = They / Them
3. Making Them Possessive: Just add “De” (的)
In English, we have to use entirely new words for possession (my, your, his, her, our). In Chinese, you just add de (的) to the pronoun:
- Wǒ de (我的) = My / Mine
- Nǐ de (你的) = Your / Yours
- Tā de (他的 / 她的) = His / Hers
- Wǒmen de (我们的) = Our / Ours
The Shortcut: Drop the “De”
If you’re talking about something with a close relationship to you, like a family member or a close institution, you can drop the de. It sounds a lot more natural!
- My mom: Say Wǒ māma (我妈妈) instead of Wǒ de māma.
- Our school: Say Wǒmen xuéxiào (我们学校) instead of Wǒmen de xuéxiào.
Switch It Up!
Because pronouns don’t change their form based on whether they’re the subject or the object, look how easy it is to flip a sentence:
- Wǒ xǐhuan tāmen. (我喜欢他们。) = I like them.
- Tāmen xǐhuan wǒ. (他们喜欢我。) = They like me.
